Job Summary
The Assistant Director of Public Relations develops media relations and publicity strategies for the University of West Florida, under the direction of the Executive Director of University Marketing and Communications. This position develops strategies, identifies opportunities and secures publicity to elevate the University?s profile locally, regionally and nationally.

The Assistant Director manages writing, editing, distribution and pitching of University news and works with members of the media to provide information and resources. The position also works with University communicators, faculty, staff and students to identify opportunities, communicate resources and provide training.

The position serves as a member of the University Marketing and Communications leadership team, and aligns the public relations strategy with the institutional integrated communications strategy. The position serves as a key member of the crisis communication, issue management and institutional reputation team.

The position requires demonstrated success in public relations, extensive knowledge of media organizations (print, broadcast, digital) and success placing stories in the local, regional and national media. The position requires the employee to make prompt decisions that affect the public relations strategy for the University.

The Assistant Director must have extremely strong written and oral communication skills, including extensive experience in writing and editing press releases, editorials, advertisements and marketing and communication plans. This also includes the ability to distill and clarify ideas, to think both creatively and analytically and to synthesize ideas quickly under deadlines.

This position requires strong management and leadership qualities. The Assistant Director must be able to manage workload, develop efficient and effective processes and communicate with internal and external audiences. This position must function independently, as a member of the University and UMC leadership team and under the direction of the Executive Director.

- Proven experience pitching and securing coverage in local, regional and national media contacts.
- Outstanding organization skills with the proven ability to consistently produce high-quality projects and initiatives under tight deadlines.
- Strong ability to pay close attention to detail.
- A comprehensive understanding and working knowledge of public relations strategies.
- Significant experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
- Experience using digital communication tools such as publicity software, project management systems, cloud-based storage services and others.
Solid working knowledge of Associated Press style.
- Leadership and management experience.

Minimum Qualifications
Master?s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and two years of appropriate experience: or a bachelor?s degree in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of appropriate experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an integrated communications department/agency.
- Experience in higher education.
- Experience developing integrated communications strategies.

Proactively pitches institutional initiatives to a variety of local, regional and national publications. Develops and manages excellent relationships with members of the media, in partnership with the Executive Director and other team members. Monitors, manages, analyzes and develops reports for institutional publicity and media relations.
