Custodial Crew Leader

$15.89 an hour

Located in Salt Lake City, the University of Utah is a public, 4-year institution committed to providing an exceptional academic and co-curricular experience for students and the University community. The ?U? is a PAC-12 institution with over 33,000 students. Heritage Commons is home to 2,800 students who live in the 2002 Winter Olympic athlete village, residing in 20 co-ed residence halls and 10 apartment buildings. In addition, Housing & Residential Education has two apartment buildings located in downtown Salt Lake City that constitute Downtown Commons. Heritage Commons constitutes 868K square feet and Downtown Commons is 26K square feet. HRE is growing with a 309 bed Honors Living Learning complex (161K square feet) that opened August 2012 and additional 400 bed Entrepreneur-Innovation Living Learning complex (150K square feet) opening August 2016. The University Housing Campus Master plan calls for continued growth and construction to meet the housing demand.

When the academic year is in session, this position manages custodians as they clean and maintain the public spaces within the buildings as well as preparing rooms when students move out for new students to move in. During the summer, this position manages custodians as they clean and prepare bedrooms for summer conference guests as well as maintaining the public areas within the buildings. This position reports to the Custodial Supervisor.

Custodial Crew Leads report to a Custodial Supervisor and administers to the CMMS as directed. Custodial Crew Leads directs, provides coaching, conducts employee reviews, and disciplinary action as needed with Custodians to ensure that they maintain the public spaces within the buildings. and assists in training the custodial crew, assigning duties and instructing new workers in the proper use of equipment and materials, to achieve a high level of cleanliness in University buildings.


1. Determines the proper distribution of employees and materials for a particular day?s cleaning problems by inspecting assigned building(s) to insure an adequate cleaning job is done.
2. Insures that work standards are being adhered to by inspecting assigned work areas and completing inspection reports for review by supervisor.
3. Gives general supervision by assigning tasks and reviewing work of one to five full-time and/or five to twenty part-time custodians and custodial workers which may be in one shift or two (four hour shifts) depending on the particular needs of the building in question.
4. Assist in training new crew members in the proper use of equipment and materials by demonstration and suggestion to insure proper application of chemicals and minimum breakdown of equipment.
5. Insures that assigned work area is secured by inspecting for locked doors in accordance with regulations.
6. Maintains time sheets for individual crew members by filling in hours to insure proper credits for pay purposes.
7. Maintains adequate stock of supplies by ordering as necessary within a pre-established budget guideline.
8. Maintains positive public relations with departments by responding to specific cleaning requests.
9. Reports maintenance and emergency problems to supervisor or police respectively.
10. Performs all duties of custodians as required to insure accomplishment of assigned goals.
11. May back up supervisor by assisting him/her directly or acting for him/her during any absence.

Problem Solving

This position is given the authority to shift employees under his/her supervision in order to accomplish the daily workload.
Problems that may be encountered in this position include trying to keep assigned area clean with less than 100% staffing of a crew; and trying to motivate employees to do a thorough job.


The incumbent is a working crew leader and must be willing and able to perform all duties normally expected of lower level custodians. However, his/her supervision responsibilities should take precedence as the need arises.

Security is extremely important. Staff must maintain upmost integrity when cleaning student spaces.

During certain times of the year, this position requires staff to work weekends and holidays. Flexibility is needed in availability (both days being able to work as well as hours available within the day).

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of previous custodial experience; the ability to lift 50 lbs.; the ability to climb a minimum of six feet on an authorized stepladder or scaffolding; and demonstrated oral and written communication skills required. Previous supervisory experience would be helpful.
