The Placement Coordination Nurse has several roles in assuring the safe and timely placement of patients into and within the organization. He/she fields calls from physicians who want to transfer or admit their patients to the organization for urgent or specialty treatment; applies clinical expertise to prioritize or 'time' admissions; works with care providers and sending facilities to coordinate a plan for each patient's arrival; and then works with many others at the hospital to prepare for the patient's arrival and care. In a sense, he/she is a traffic controller and logistics manager: optimizing information transfer, safe bed assignment, and timely patient flow within the organization; and assuring appropriate utilization of, and subsequent reimbursement for, hospital resources. Critical thinking, collaborative decision making, and caring customer service are essential.

State of Vermont Registered Nurse (RN) license required. The University of Vermont Medical Center is moving toward an all Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) workforce. All external candidates hired into, or current employees promoted to, a RN position will be required to obtain their BSN as outlined in the terms of their offer letter. Current internal RNs are strongly encouraged to pursue a BSN to support this initiative.

Four or more years of direct patient care in an acute setting, or six or more years in progressively-responsible RN position(s). Previous experience with coordination of care preferred. Previous experience with Performance Improvement preferred.
