Job Description

Research Assistant

The University of Pittsburgh is seeking a qualified Research Assistant for the Department of Psychology.

This position will involve working with participants in 2 samples as part of an NIH-funded research study that examines how normal differences between people relate to their heart health. In one sample, the incumbent will assist in obtaining data on whether daily life experiences, biological and social factors, lifestyle characteristics and behaviors, brain function, and brain structure relate to changes in heart health over time. In a second sample, the incumbent will participate in data collection designed to investigate whether a 12-month moderate intensity exercise program can improve heart and brain health. For both samples, the incumbent will train participants to monitor their blood pressure, mood, and activities during daily life over the course of a week and will be in charge of handling data quality issues with respect to this information.

The incumbent will also be responsible for the following:
  • Assessing clinic blood pressure, conducting interviews and administering questionnaires to participants
  • Conducting telephone follow-up interviews with participants to ensure that they are following the research protocol
  • Maintaining records to ensure that training and data collection are occurring in a timely fashion
  • Data entry, transcription, and scoring as part of this project

A qualified candidate should have one to two years relevant experience in a psychological or medical research setting.

Education Required Baccalaureate Minimum Related Experience Level Required 1-2 years experience Additional Education and/or Experience Essential to the Position

Major in Psychology is preferred. Experience with medical measures (e.g., blood pressure) and medical terminology is preferred.
One to two years of experience in psychological or medical research is preferred.
Conduct manual sphygmomanometric blood pressure assessments and ability to deliver a training protocol with individuals as well as with groups of individuals.

Required Licenses/Certifications Child Protection Clearances

The following PA Act 153 clearances and background checks may be required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance.
