Library Specialist I
The Library Specialist I is responsible for providing assistance for both the Annex and Evans Library Service Desks, Wednesday through Sunday daytime hours. Assists users with electronic course reserves. Helps ensure items selected for course reserves are entered and coded correctly.
Required Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience. One year of related library experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
Previous experience in a customer service centered environment. Prior experience in an academic setting.

Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Excellent customer service skills. Good interpersonal skills. Keyboarding skills. Basic knowledge of email, word processing, spreadsheets and varied library online research database searches and/or processing. Requires extensive bending, reaching, and lifting of medium to light loads. Ability to occasionally push a heavy book truck or lift a moderate load. Requires the handling of books which can contain dust or microscopic mold spores. Ability to extensively view a computer screen and use a computer keyboard and mouse/trackball type of point-and-click device. Ability to stand and walk throughout the buildings, including narrow aisles, emergency stairwells and small study rooms, walk up and down stairs and occasionally climb and balance on a stepstool. Also requires the ability to operate key and numeric keypad door locking systems.

General knowledge of library services and functions. Conflict resolution skills. Ability to learn new computer systems and detail-oriented processes quickly. Ability to respond positively and effectively to interruptions and function in an open-office environment. Excellent phone, in-person, and email communication skills. Reliable attendance. Hours for this position are Saturdays through Wednesdays, 8:30am-5pm. Must be able to adjust schedule on an occasional basis to help cover during extended hours or in the event of an emergency. Must be able to work early evenings or days during summer and periods between academic semesters.
Detailed Job Duties
Assists with general operations for both the Annex and Evans Library Service Desks during assigned hours. Provides basic assistance in accessing resources. Uses automated library systems to charge/discharge materials. Assists patrons in identifying needs and locating/accessing materials. Demonstrates basic conflict resolution skills with users. Provides assistance on tasks related to renewals, recalls, locates, new materials receiving and MediaMatrix. Provides assistance to users regarding overdue fines, fees and bills.
Provides assistance to users regarding course reserve materials including instructing users (students and faculty) in the use of the online course reserves system (Ares). Helps ensure items selected for course reserves are entered and coded correctly. Follows procedures and policies related to electronic reserves. Assists instructional faculty in determining items for course reserves. These tasks require basic knowledge of the course reserves system (Ares) and some use of independent judgment.
Responds and takes appropriate action when security and/or fire alarms are set off or other building crises occur, facilitates safe evacuation, implements administrative Call Tree, and performs post event department checks, as appropriate.
Assists in monitoring the public environment and responding to disruptions. Opens and checks public areas for access by users. Follows up on any outstanding facility issues related to access to public study spaces. Performs study area sweeps for compliance with food/drink/noise guidelines. Serves as contact point for reporting and follow up with appropriate authorities (facilities, UPD , etc.) on environmental problems during early morning or night/weekend hours. Periodically reviews status of group study rooms/chalk boards/bulletin boards and computers in order to support an inclusive and welcoming environment. Provides backup for opening both Evans and Annex for weekend hours.
Collaborates with other late night/weekend support staff. Provides best service possible to library users through participatory decision making and implementation of operations and guidelines.
Performs other duties as assigned.
