Senior Network Engineer
Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure Support Services, the Senior Network Engineer is responsible for implementing, maintaining, supporting, developing and designing communication networks throughout Teachers College campus in coordination with vendors and Columbia University IT department.
The goal is to ensure the integrity of high availability network infrastructure and provide maximum performance for campus users. Users may be students, faculty and staff, as well as coordinate services with vendors and suppliers.
The Network Engineer will work internally as part of TC's organization's IT support team, or externally as part of an outsourced IT networking consultancy firm.
Establishing the networking environment by designing system configuration, directing system installation, defining, documenting and enforcing system standards.
The design and implementation of new solutions and improving resilience of the current environment.
Maximizing network performance by monitoring performance, troubleshooting network problems and outages, scheduling upgrades and collaborating with network architects on network optimization.
Undertaking data network fault investigations in local and wide area environments, using information from multiple sources.
Securing network systems by establishing and enforcing policies, and defining and monitoring access.
The support and administration of firewall environments in line with IT security policy.
Reporting network operational status by gathering and prioritizing information and managing projects.
Upgrading data network equipment to the latest stable firmware releases.
The configuration of routing and switching equipment (HPe experience a big plus).
The configuration of hosted IP voice services (experience in a HP and SaaS environment preferable).
The basic configuration of firewalls (experience with Cisco AND Palo Alto systems a plus).
Remote support of on-site engineers and end users/customers during installation.
Remote troubleshooting and fault finding if issues occur upon initial installation.
Capacity management and audit of IP addressing and hosted devices within data centers.
Liaising with project management teams, third-line engineers and service desk engineers on a regular basis.
Communication and interacting with college administrative, faculty and student for initial requirement capture.
Response to needs of the customer for installation, maintenance, and equipment malfunctions.
Updating job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations.
BS in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of advanced networking practices with 7-10 years of advanced experience.
Proven ability to define and develop solutions based on business requirements.
Demonstrated knowledge of design, implementation, and maintenance of Software Defined Networking environment.
Demonstrated knowledge of VoIP implementation and support.
Ability to maintain network security through proper configuration of VPN and Firewalls.
Ability to communicate in an understandable and professional manner, both written and verbal.
Strong organizational skills and ability to operate in a fast moving environment that at times requires quick response to high profile system outages.
The ability to bend, squat, crawl at times and lift up to 75+ pounds of equipment.
Technical, analytical and interpersonal skills.
In-depth expertise with TCP/IP, LAN/WAN networking technologies and reliable troubleshooting techniques.
Experience in deploying application server software such as jBoss EAP and Docker or Ansible in a multi-tier architecture environment.
Experience with cloud network infrastructure design, support and implementation. AWS and/or Azure a major plus.
Experience with disaster recovery planning and testing, auditing, risk analysis, and business continuity planning.
Experience with Cisco AND Palo Alto systems.
Experience in a HP and SaaS environment.
HPe - Network Design, implementation and management experience.
Current CCNA and/or CCNP certification.
Understanding of Windows Server and Open DNS and DHCP services.
Good knowledge of scripting languages such as Perl, Python and PHP.
