Functions/Duties of Position






The Research Assistant 1 can perform basic materials science laboratory test experiments with minimal supervision, in a research laboratory. Must be able to be easily trained to perform experiments, troubleshoot simple problems with equipment and experiments, and be able to compile and report the results of various tests. The RAI must be able to work with other students, research assistants, post-doctoral fellows and faculty in a collaborative manner.

The focus of the lab is on materials development and the testing of physical properties. Some of the work is in the development of new materials, and some is in the evaluation of existing materials. Typical testing protocols involve the following: flexure testing, fracture toughness testing, color and gloss measurement, microscopy of surfaces, hardness testing, infrared spectroscopy, rheology, etc.)

The position includes some basic understanding of test principles, as discussed with the PI, and may include contributions to scientific presentations and publications.

The ideal candidate will have some experience in mechanical and physical testing, experience with dentistry terminology and materials, self-motivation, excellent command of the English language, ability to work in a team, and ability to work independently once trained.



Job Requirements






REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS/BA in science field
  • Knowledge of dentistry and dental terminology and materials use
  • Knowledge of mechanical and physical testing protocols
  • Able to work two days in succession (important because specimens are typically made on one day and tested on the following day after 24 hours of aging)
  • Able to stand at a lab bench, sit at a microscope, perform laboratory manipulations, move and carry light lab equipment, perform image analysis experiments, operate computers and related software, communicate easily with co-workers and support staff, assist and instruct other lab members with scientific methods
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
