The Oregon Clinical Translational Research Institute (OCTRI) is a large and complex NIH-funded program that creates an “academic home” for clinical and translational research; expands and builds upon current education curriculum to engage, train, and nurture new inter-disciplinary investigators; and creates a coordinated infrastructure of core research tools and services. The Institute budget is approximately $14 million annually with more than 60 employees, and provides research services for a wide range of scientific disciplines.

Functions/Duties of Position






The Clinical Research Manager is responsible for the co-management of the Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) Bionutrition and Study Coordinator Team (BSCT). This position consults with and advises the CTRC Program Director in close coordination with the Bionutrition Manager on the day-to-day management, development, direction, coordination, and evaluation of the study coordinator service program within the Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute (OCTRI).

The Manager's responsibilities include overseeing the study coordinator personnel and providing direct services to research protocols to insure the goals and objectives are accomplished. The manager is responsible for the review of resource requests and protocols for feasibility, study start-up and site activation, investigator support, resource allocation, and individual supervision and training of study coordinator staff.

The Clinical Research Manager is administratively responsible for ensuring the quality of study coordination services. S/he ensures that all activities are carried out in accordance with established research protocol standards, and in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedural requirements. S/he is responsible for maintaining the knowledge and abilities essential to the performance of stated behaviors.

The Manager acts as an educator, working interdependently to provide innovative and comprehensive educational experiences in the areas of orientation, in service training; and continuing education for clinical research. A primary function of the Manager is to facilitate relationships between the study coordinator unit and other OCTRI staff, creating an environment of cooperation, teamwork, and motivation.


BSCT is a high functioning co-led team of Bionutritionists and Study Coordinators that provide essential research services at OHSU. As Co-Manager of an inter-disciplinary and dynamic group of individuals, s/he provides cross-coverage support for Bionutrition Program services during sick/vacation time, indirect mentoring and management of Bionutritionists performing study coordinator work, and provides administrative support to the Bionutrition Manager as needed. This position works closely with the Bionutrition Manager on issues of operations of the unit, strategic planning for the future, and team management.

Job Requirements






Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • At least three year's experience conducting research activities
  • Requires knowledge of protocol adherence and general research practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and manage multiple priorities
  • Theoretical or practical background in biological or social sciences, or substantial transferable experience
  • Experience performing clinical technical support duties, working as a clinical Study Coordinator Unit Manager, or a clinical research coordinator
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Knowledge of research methods and rules of patient confidentiality
  • Understanding of medical terminology for screening and recruitment in the context of a clinical trials investigational agents
  • Organizational skills and ability to accurately report data
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with faculty, investigators, staff, students, and visitors at all levels within OHSU and in the community
  • The ability to forge and foster collaboratively working relationships and enlist the support of faculty and staff, both within and external to OCTRI
  • Computer skills in MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint; ability to utilize database systems to record, track, and report patient census
  • The ability to speak on a one-to-one, or group basis to obtain and convey information
  • Ability to manage and perform multiple tasks under conditions of fluctuating workloads, competing requirements, and changing deadlines. Working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction
  • Using discretionary judgement in handling confidential matters
  • Ability to analyze problems and offer creative solutions, and implement changes
  • SoCRA or CCRP Certification
  • Able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
  • Will have contact with human bodily fluids in the collection of specimens
  • Ability to lift approximately 30 lbs or more, bend, stoop, stand, & walk throughout the shift
  • Primary office is located in Hatfield Research Center. Position may require movement between multiple buildings in one day and travel on the OHSU tram.May also need to work in other on or off campus sites as needed

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in related field
  • Previous experience conducting physical measurements (vital signs, phlebotomy)
  • Knowledge or interest in food or human nutrition
  • Computer skills in nutrition and research related software.
